October Book BUZZ!

Hi ya’ll, we are fresh back from Austin Teen Book Festival where we worked in the author “green room” (and got to hobnob when we were not busy fetching ice or showing authors where the restrooms were).  It takes a lot of dedicated volunteers to run an event this big, and we were impressed with how smoothly things ran and how much EVERYONE enjoyed the experience!

Endangered by Eliot Schrefer
Publisher: Scholastic, Inc.
Release date: October 1, 2012

I picked up Eliot’s book at the festival, and literally devoured it in one night because I couldn not put it down (curse you 5:00 am alarm!!).  A compelling, terrifying story that tugs on your heartstrings and definitely has the Bonobo cute factor.  It’s also a sobering look at humanity.  Ya’ll know contemporary fiction is not my usual thang, but this one is definitely worth checking out.  Many thanks to Jeff Hirsch for recommending this to me!

Destroy Me by Tahereh Mafi
Publisher: Harper Collins
Release date: October 2, 2012

Technically, this isn’t a book, it’s a novella.  It’s fun to say – say it with me – novella.  Anyways, it’s a continuation of Shatter Me,  told from Warner’s point of view.  Oh Warner, I hardly knew you.   It’s a nice treat to tide us over until Unravel Me comes out on February 5, 2013.  I’m not sure if there will be any more books coming our way after that, but I’m hooked on this story about Juliette and her deadly cheese touch.*

The Twelve
by Justin Cronin
Publisher: Random House
Release date: October 16, 2012

AAAAHHHH!!  I’ve been waiting for this sequel to The Passage for stinkin evah!  See my glowing review HERE (yes, I loved this book and I still love it more than 2 years later).  After the nasty cliffhanger-ish ending, I’ve been dying to know what happened.   Post apocolyptic world, animalistic vampire creatures, and a criminal who is the “queen” to the viral’s “hive”.  Amy better kick some bootie soon and save my peeps in The Colony.

Beautiful Redemption (Beautiful Creatures) by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl
Publisher: Little, Brown Books for Young Readers
Release date: October 23, 2012

Really, this is the last one?  NOOO!!  I can’t wait to read the conclusion to the saga of Ethan and Lena.  Magic, love, betrayal, southern mystery and atmosphere … I have enjoyed it all.  While the books may be wrapped up, the movie industry will bring this story to theaters sometime in the next year – and with stars like Emma Thompson, Jeremy Irons, Amy Rossum, and Viola Davis, how can it not be a hit?

The Evolution of Mara Dyer by Michelle Hodkin
Publisher: Simon & Schuster Books For Young Readers
Release date: October 23, 2012

Fab sequel to The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer!  Mara and Noah find out they have more in common with each other than they thought … and the romance is steamy and oh-so-tantalizing.  As for the creepy ex-boyfriend Jude – is he really dead?  A ghost?  Alive?  Or just a figment of Mara’s imagination?   No one but Noah believes that she’s seen him, or that he’s stalking her.  Next installment is The Retribution of Mara Dyer!

Finale (Hush Hush Saga) by Becca Fitzpatrick
Publisher: Simon & Schuster Books For Young Readers
Release date: October 23, 2012

Can you believe that this is the LAST book in the series? It seems just like yesterday we were reading Hush, Hush and dreaming about Nora and Patch. Remember that fab cover? Why do things have to end? *insert sad music*

Rebel Heart (Dustlands Series #2) by Moira Young
Publisher: Margaret K. McElderry Books
Release date: October 30, 2012

Yes, this is the sequel to Blood Red Road (see review HERE), the book people either loved or hated because of the narrator’s voice.   I loved it because it pulled me in, and put me right in the middle of the story.  Now that Saba’s found Lugh, will she and Jack ever see each other again?  What about little sister Emmi?  Augh!  Can’t wait to find out!

*hoping you got that reference to Diary of a Wimpy Kid – if not, well, you have now.

So tell me in the comments below what books YOU are excited to read this month?
See you in the STACKS,
Nancy

Ariana & Nancy, I am actually about halfway through The Nightghosts’ Child. I saw it pop up on Goodreads’ list of 2012 debut YA authors, and it’s really quite good. A lot of suspense/action, good characters and I think there’s a bit of a budding romance… :-) It looks like the author is only 17!

Nancy, I love your reviews/book buzz – they crack me up!
