write, camera, action!

clapperIt’s no wonder we never have a lapse of movies to see at the theaters with all the wonderful books we have out there.  I’ve always wondered how so many people could be so incredibly talented as I read book after book in awe of the beautiful storytelling.  I now know, for certain, that I am not the only one who thinks so.

There are so many novels that are being optioned for movies right now.  Even more impressively, before the book is even released to the public.  I don’t know if it has always been this tape reeelway or I just hadn’t noticed it.   I know, I know…   There are a great amount of books, which have been optioned for film, and nothing was ever made of it.  I certainly hope that doesn’t happen to the authors of these books.  As authors go, they are pretty amazing and downright nice.  Yeah, that’s right.  I love when good things happen to kind people.  It makes my world go round.  That’s one reason I hope that Becca Fitzpatrick gets optioned for a movie deal for her Hush, Hush Series and Kimberly Derting would have a hit with The Body Finder, that’s for sure.  Thanks to movies like Twilight and Harry Potter, YA is gonna rock the flock!!  Well, YA and vampires.  Call me psyched!!

I list a couple of books below that must be downright awesome as they are already optioned for film AND one is already being filmed.  Let’s just say I. CAN. NOT. WAIT. TO. READ. THESE. BOOKS!!!  I agree with Lauren Oliver as she wrote on her blog that she would like us to read her book before watching the film.  Can I get an amen?

ticketsMy friends and I went to the midnight showing of “New Moon” earlier this year. (Yes, we were dorks.  Yes, we sat in the second row from the front.   Yes, our necks ached and our ears hurt from the girls screaming.  – Okay, it was my friends’ ears that hurt from my constant screaming for Edward!)  What truly made us laugh and gawk on our way out of the theater is the group of young girls who sat behind us who, after Edward proposes and the credits roll, screamed that they couldn’t wait until the next movie to find out what happens.  REALLY????  You couldn’t pick up an awesome book, and get this, READ IT??  I don’t get it.  I seem to think that there are so many more YA readers now than when I was in junior high and high school.  We DO have an eclectic selection and publishing companies marketing to teens to read.  YAY for reading!!

Here’s just a few of the books lately that have been optioned for movies before the books were even released.

YA books optioned for film:

Delirium by Lauren Oliver

She is drawing us into her new world by posting the first chapter here.  I can’t say thank you enough.  This is one book I am dying to read AND watch the movie.  I really can’t wait!  Oliver is someone special.

i am number fourI am Number Four by Pittacus Lore

Let’s just say that this is a big deal.  A really big deal!  Harper Teen Publishing sure can pick ‘em.  The writing talent they are able to get is superb and apparently the marketing department needs a raise.  They are releasing some of our favorite books lately.  With all the hype, we hope that this one will be one of our top ten books at the end of the year.  One of the producers is none other than the legend, Steven Spielberg.  I like the information that Jesse at Movieset  put together.  Can you say, can’t wait to read this book?  Yeah, let’s say it together…

Adult books optioned for film:

blood oath by christopher farnsworthBlood Oath and Black Site by Christopher Farnsworth

We met Chris and filmed an interview with him at the beautiful Legacy books in Plano, Texas.  We liked Blood Oath so much that we did a review in three.  Therefore, there is no question why it got optioned for a movie.  Cade kicks butt!  I can’t wait to see this one either!  This will be a long and exciting series.

the passageThe Passage by Justin Cronin

Well, here is another book with bite.  Readers are beyond excited about it.  The press is favorable and everyone wants a piece of this brilliant book.

Love, STACKGirl Shannan who is in awe of writers and loves movies!

  1. I would love it if Delirium got made into a movie–I’m already hooked, and I LOVED Before I Fall. I definitely have to read the book before I see a movie. It makes me feel like I have a connection with a movie already, and I’m sure to love it more. And, yes, I screamed for Edward, too :)

  2. @Meredith – Glad I wasn’t the only one who enjoys Edward. It seems that Jacob was getting all the attention in New Moon. Glad we have a sisterhood. AND Before I Fall was awesome! I totally agree!

  3. Becca Fitzpatrick says:

Yes, yes! The Body Finder would make an AWESOME film. Especially all the creepy parts from the villain’s POV (no spoilers!)

  4. @Becca – That is exactly what I was thinking! And the ending would be fun to see!

I completely agree that you should always read the book before seeing the movie. Reading is so much more interactive than watching a movie, and it forces you to create the scenes in your own imagination. Watching a movie is passive, and you don’t have to invest creatively in it. In my family, the rule was always that you could see a movie only after you read the book. (I like to go back and re-read the book after I see the movie, and I “watch” the scenes playing out as I read the words – pulls together the two media!)

Wow. How cool is that? I can’t even begin to imagine how great it would be to get a book optioned before it’s even published! Great post! :)

  7. I too am a dork who was at the midnight release of New Moon. Are you doing it for Eclipse? LOL. Love the movies but loved the books even more. I heard If I STay by Gayle Forman is going to be a movie as well and I can’t wait. I adored that book. I haven’t read Lauren Oliver. I need to check out her!

  8. @Esther – Rock on, sister! I totally agree about reading the book first. I LOVE to picture my character first before allowing a casting director to change it…sometimes. For Sookie Stackhouse, I still picture my Sookie when reading the books but HEART the Eric from True Blood. He is what I picture now while reading and in my dreams. haha

@Samantha – thanks! It is way cool! I would just be psyched just to get published. This would rock my socks off.

@Kelley – I have sworn off midnight movies. maybe. probably. I think I will see Eclipse the next day. Are you midnighting it?
Woohoo! I would love to see If I Stay into a movie! I loved that book and Gayle Forman. So cool! Yes, read Lauren Oliver!! Delirium is on my CAN’T Wait to read list FOR SURE!

  9. I haven’t decided about Eclipse at midnight for sure. I have friends going and I’m sure I’ll end up getting tickets. It was my favorite of the books so I’m really jazzed about the movie! I’m excited for If I Stay too. I will check out Lauren Oliver. Can you tell me if it’s a HEA or will it ruin it?

  10. Hi Kelley – Can’t tell you about the ending. ;-) I can tell you that I was satisfied.
Btw, I’ll probably end up at the midnight showing too…The fact that I HAD to buy 3 cups from our movie theater today, one each of Bella, Jacob, and Edward doesn’t help my “stay home and wait until the next day” attitude. I am getting stinkin’ excited!

  11. I am SO excited too.

Hmm, okay you were satisfied. That helps. Thanks! I always get so nervous about endings. I like my HEA! LOL
