Pandemonium by Lauren Oliver, a discussion

Lauren Oliver has definitely hit another one out of the park with Pandemonium, but please, tell us we weren’t the only ones left with our mouths hanging open at the end!!! Actually, some of us were screaming…

Today, we not only talk about the ending, but also Julian vs Alex and our predictions on the third, and final installment, Requiem.

You’re the best, you guys! I totally loved this book! (and delirium too) Lauren Oliver is such a beautiful writer!

I love both Julian and Alex and would be happy with her ending up with either one. BUUUUUT I’m with you, girl, I’m leaning towards Julian. And I don’t think he’s totally a pussy. He did dive right in and fight those scavengers AND he killed that one guy! I just can’t wait for Requiem.

Oh. My. Gosh. Finished this book about 10 minutes ago, and I am tempted to hunt down Lauren Oliver for leaving me hanging on such a shocking note. Although, I have to say, I did see it coming. As soon as Raven said they had an escapee from Portland, the Crypts, I knew it was him. As for how he made an entrance – by interrupting Lena and Julian; saying “Don’t believe her”. – leads me to believe that he is going to fight for her, most definitely. That he is telling Julian not to believe it will he and Lena, but rather himself and Lena. I also think he’s feeling VERY betrayed. Who can blame the guy? Although, I find myself mad at him. I guess it’s sort of the Gale/Peeta, Edward/Jacob effect, but I am angry at him for coming back and ruining the balance Lena had found for half a minute. I am also a little happy, because I had some heart wrenching moments along with Lena in the book where I missed Alex intensely. But lo! There’s Julian. And I am rootin g for him a tad more than Alex, because Lena herself mentions that she is much more comfortable around Julian than she was around Alex. Maybe I like him more because their romance took so long to develop, and so I fell in love with him alongside her. Also, how Oliver writes that his eyes has lost their warmth, makes me a bit more wary of him. How will he react? Coldly, to seeing them together? Who knows. I am apprehensive though, of what the story will turn into. I really don’t want it to follow the cheesy, classic, Twilight story line of Edward, Bella, and Jacob; She cannot love one without hurting the other. But I trust that Oliver is a much more mature writer than allowing the book to follow that path, and I also think Lena is much too solution-driven to be the ‘damsel in distress’, caught between two loves; she is tougher than that – hopefully. (although due to the situation and through default, Lena is forced into that position. Perhaps she will play the part with less whining than Bella in the Twilight series.) I cannot wait for Requiem, it is bound to be interesting! :)
