Book Review: Insatiable by Meg Cabot

Release date Tuesday JUNE 8, 2010

When I found out that Meg Cabot, author of The Princess Diaries and Allie Finkle’s Rules for Girls, had written an adult vampire novel titled Insatiable, well … it was a little like hearing Mary Poppins drop the f-bomb.

The book cover features a seductively reclined female in a red dress … I quickly found out that appearances were deceiving because 1) this is NOT an erotica novel at all and 2) it is totally funny, exciting and romantic and mocks (just a little) the whole vampire genre and 3) I loved it!

All of Cabot’s trademark humor and romance are here, plus pulse-pounding action.  Meena is a strong woman with a stressful job, a bad breakup behind her and, oh yeah, she knows how you are going to die.  I loved her sense of humor and her passion about saving total strangers from an early grave, even though they won’t always follow her advice.  She has a cute Pomeranian named Jack Bauer (as in 24) and lives with her brother Jon.  She writes for a soap opera, Insatiable and her superiors tell her she has to write a vampire story line to boost ratings (against her will and better judgment.)

Things get complicated when she meets Lucien Antonescu, a Romanian prince (and extremely tall dark and handsome vampire.)  She is totally smitten – and so is he.  Lucien is a professor of history, and Cabot gives him some actual personality.  He is the ruler of the vampires and the son of the original Dracula – and has decreed that vampires may not kill humans.  When Meena foresees her brother and the Palatine assassin Alaric dying by his hand, Lucien does his best not to make that happen (and succeeds, I might add.)

Alaric is a guy serious about his job for the Palatine Guards, the Vatican-run team of vampire killers.  I liked that he fell for Meena against his will but gave in to it totally at the end, even though he will never admit it in a million years to anyone.  He also softened (just slightly) his black/white stance on vampires being all evil, so it makes me think he’s not such a bad guy.  He may have a shot at Meena in the sequel!

All in all, a fun, snappy and romantic summer book that even the most jaded of vampire-readers will enjoy.

I give this novel 4 STACKS

I’m a huge Meg Cabot fan and an avid reader of vampire chick lit! Unlike a lot of authors who are borrowing way too much from the Twilight vampire/werewolf love triangle formula, this one is fresh, funny and totally original. Love it!
