Review: Starcrossed by Elizabeth C. Bunce

An unexpected page-turner that had me constantly hitting the repeat button for my two-year olds favorite TV show!

description from Amazon… In a glamorous castle full of Llyvraneth’s elite, Celyn Contrare serves as a lady-in-waiting to shy young Merista Nemair. Her days are spent dressing in velvet, attending Lady Merista, navigating court gossip, and charming noblemen over lavish feasts.

And at night, she picks locks, steals jewels, forges documents, and collects secrets…

This book is so much more than I thought it would be. It had action, daring female lead, charming and fierce secondary characters, stellar writing and a plot that kept me guessing right up till the very end. Who knew the innocuous cover held such a marvelous story!

My love of historical fiction is no secret, nor is my love of speculative fiction so when I picked this book up and discovered that it was indeed a mixture of both, well I felt like I just won the book lottery. Three times over. I would say (well, really the back of the book says) this is a smattering or mixing of sort of the Renaissance era with a little mythology and a bunch of snow. Eclectic mix, but it works. I promise.

From the very beginning the reader is thrown into Celyn’s life and kept on their toes piecing together her former life while her new life begins. Celyn is not perfect, she is flawed and has her share of issues; but she is resourceful, loyal and oh, so daring. LOVE her.

One of the great things about this book is all the secondary characters. Are they “good?” Are they “bad?” Are they what they appear to be? Really, Bunces’ characters are so well crafted you begin to believe they are real.

My only complaint is the cover. It’s not bad per say, it just looks like a MG cover and it is definitely not a MG book.

I give this book 4 STACKS

See you in the STACKS,
Stacy

FYI: The next book in the series is LIARS MOON, just haven’t been able to find a release date yet.
