review: Virals by Kathy Reichs
from goodreads.com: Tory Brennan, niece of acclaimed forensic anthropologist Temperance Brennan (of the Bones novels and hit TV show), is the leader of a ragtag band of teenage “sci-philes” who live on a secluded island off the coast of South Carolina. When the group rescues a dog caged for medical testing on a nearby island, they are exposed to an experimental strain of canine parvovirus that changes their lives forever.
As the friends discover their heightened senses and animal-quick reflexes, they must combine their scientific curiosity with their newfound physical gifts to solve a cold-case murder that has suddenly become very hot if they can stay alive long enough to catch the killer’s scent.
Fortunately, they are now more than friends they’re a pack. They are Virals.
review: After thirteen popular adult books and a hit television show (Bones), I wondered why was Kathy Reichs branching out into the young adult genre? I knew that this genre was very popular and one of the fastest growing today. I knew that students would love her writing style. But I wondered how did she know…or did she?
Virals by Kathy Reichs is her first young adult forensic mystery. It’s full of teenagers, action, and my personal favorite, dogs. When interviewed, the author stated that her son actually came up with the idea for her to write this series and she based it on her personal experience with her dog. She also thinks that young adult books are just as complex as adult books, just with different dialog.
So, how are dogs involved in this story you wonder? Well, if you’ve read the adult series (or not), take the niece of Temperance Brennan and put her on an island with friends and parents who are scientists, throw in a mystery and some bad guys, and voila! You have Virals!
While a lot happens to the main character, Tory, and her friends, you do have some clues as the book is divided into sections. Just reading the section titles would make my heart start pounding harder…really! It’s hard to write too much about this story without giving away any spoilers but it has it all…drama, intrigue, clues, choices to be made, viruses, and yes, sequels!
Enjoy the first of many stories by this author!
See you in the STACKS,
Valerie, for those that don’t know Bones (the TV show) is loosely based on her Temperance Brennan series and her life as a forensic anthropologist.
