My thoughts: I very much enjoyed the unique flavor of this novel – it’s different than most of the dystopia/post-apocalyptic novels out there. Oh, and I love me some Romance (with a capital R). Logan and Rachel have tension aplenty.
Rachel is an independent girl, living in a community that treats the women as second class citizens. Her father Jared taught her to track and hunt in the Wasteland, against society’s rules, and she knows she is good at it. She is feisty, stubborn and impulsive – counterpoint to Logan, whose orderly logic and discipline frustrates her at times.
Logan is smart and protective of Rachel. He invents things like tracking devices and other technology (that seem a little out of place in this world). He takes beating after beating in this book – physical and mental – but moves forward out of love and loyalty for Jared and Rachel. I loved his “best case scenario/worst case scenario” debates.
The Commander is one evil dude – an egomaniac who is a dictator. He kills whatever gets in his way. Wish I knew why he hates Logan so much – that’s one of those unanswered questions that I’m sure will be addressed in the next installment.
Yep, lots of fighting and killing in this book. Blood aplenty, people die, and beatings are taken. Not to mention the Cursed One toasting people to extra-crispy. I wish we’d had a bit more background on how this world came to be the way it is – and how exactly the Cursed One came about.
And to top it all off … cover love! Fiesty caped redhead in a forest – beautiful!
